So you wanna be a fashion photographer? Sounds very exciting? Sailing around on yachts with models. Shooting in the Caribbean or Tahiti or maybe even Paris with your favorite model is a perk of the job right? How fun it must be to shoot models for Victoria's Secret and Sports Illustrated! Who would not want to travel to exotic locales and make a fortune and work with and befriend the most beautiful women in the world?

Everything listed above, while possible, is not exactly what we do. I know, i know it looks like that in the movies and on television. And yes, i was in Greece this year, Rome and the Caribbean working on shoots with very lovely models. But it is not that simple or everyone would be doing it right? Right!

A fashion photographer conceptualizes shoots, develops and prints out photos of models wearing the attractive creations of fashion designers. One of the significant attributes that a fashion photographer should have is a creative eye and the ability to capture the models in a way that is creative that will catch the attention of various prospective buyers.

The photographs shot by a fashion photographer can be utilized in numerous fashion magazines. for instance Vogue and Elle, or they can be featured in various advertisements. A fashion photographer must be at ease while working with models to capture the right quality poses and photographs.

There is more to fashion, photography, and fashion photography than meets the eye. Bear in mind that the craft and the business are beyond the realms of taking good photos, models, clothes, and products. Also remember that being a fashion photographer is more than an average person who takes good pictures. Technical and artistic skills in photography are required. Additional skills in styling, natural knack for clothes, great artistic inclination in modeling and composition, and entrepreneurship spirit are also a must.

If you didn't make it in the fashion photography scene yet, consider some options and career paths like working periodicals, ad agencies, department stores, fashion houses, modeling agencies, retailers, catalogues, galleries and in stock photography agencies while waiting for that big break. Experiences in these fields can hone your innate skills and may open up doors to greater opportunities.

Set realistic expectations as only a small amount of designers get to work for big name fashion houses. There are however just as important designers working for smaller companies. The fashion industry is glamorous and very competitive so keep your options open. Another benefit of getting a degree from a fashion college is the larger fashion houses prefer to work with designers with a fashion degree. This presents another opportunity to do an internship for one of the larger fashion houses and thus getting your foot or designs in the door.
